Umar Patek, 2002 Bali Bomb Terrorist, Taken Out in Indonesian Terror Raid Says Reports

Indonesia- A man wanted for his role in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed and wounded hundreds, including many foreign tourists, has been shot dead at an Internet cafe after a raid by counter terror forces, a report said.

“He was shot dead just five minutes after he logged in to the Internet,” a source on the counter terror team that reportedly killed Umar Patek, told the Jakarta Post.

There were no details as to what occurred at the Internet cafe in Pamulang in South Tangerang, Indonesia, leading to the wanted terrorist’s death.

There was a reward of up to $10 million US on the head of Umar Patek, leading to his capture.

Umar Patek, a prominent member of Al-Qaeda’s south east Asian arm, Jemaah Islamiyah, was wanted by the United States, Australia, and Indonesia on terrorism charges.

Umar Patek is believed to have served as the assistant for the field coordinator of the 2002 bombings in Bali, Indonesia, which killed 202 people including many Australians. Patek was born in 1970 and is a Javanese Arabic man, 166 cm tall, weighing 60 kg, with a brown complexion. He is also known as Umar Kecil, Umar (Arab), Pa’tek, Pak Taek, Abu Syekh, and Zacky.

Back in 2006, Umar Patek was reported killed September 14, 2006 in the Sulu province of the Philippines. But this report was never confirmed, and Patek was still at large.

Indonesian security force commanders have still refused to confirm the death of Umar Patek.
